“He was very, very mentally ill,” said his defence lawyer Frances Brennan.

His wife, in her victim impact statement, told her husband that she could no longer trust him him, but pinned the blame elsewhere. 

“If responsibility is to be placed somewhere, I place it on the mental health system which so terribly failed you and our family,” she said. “It is inconceivable that anyone suffering from a mental disturbance should be released from the hospital without a diagnosis, medication or even a follow-up appointment.
